Family Time

There really isn't anything that compares to some quality family time.  2 weeks ago our eldest son came home from University for Thanksgiving weekend. Sunday morning, the four of us got up and out of the house early, stopped for road-trip necessities (perfect time for a Cinnamon Dolce Latte) and headed out to beautiful Prince Edward County.  We rode the Glenora Ferry and then drove around the perimeter of the south shoreline... sight seeing and reminiscing - it is one of my all-time favourite places to be (any day of the year) -  I have taken the boys on this "tour" yearly, since they were in car seats... and they teasingly reminded me of how I used to bribe them to "enjoy the ride".  Now they have cell phones and Ipods to distract them...while we enjoy the drive :).

The leaves were just beginning to turn a stunning  golden and crimson hue. The smell of Autumn (fresh & crisp) was everywhere.  Bushels of apples, baskets of squash and all sizes of pumpkins were on display.

Along our way we stopped at a deserted pebble beach and had some fun skipping rocks and laughing... at "my girly throw".  Toured a vineyard.  Enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner by a roaring fire... Such a great day!

The sound of my family talking and laughing together, warms and fills my heart!  There is a joyful simplicity when we are all together like that, that puts everything into perspective :)

I hope that you have all been enjoying these gorgeous Fall days.  Thank you for visiting  ~ Stay tuned, Purple Essentials UPDATES coming soon...

5 Steps to Fabulous Fall Skin

As we surrender to the crisp Fall season you may be noticing that as the air gets cooler your skin may become increasingly dry and even itchy… your skincare needs are changing.  Your skin isn’t holding moisture the way it did through the Summer months, resulting in skin that can be dehydrated, taut and slightly uncomfortable.  The days are growing shorter, the temperatures dropping, and the air is less humid... your skin can be depleted of precious moisture.  Autumn is a time of transition, now is the time to adjust your personal care routine.

Here are 5 steps you can take to fabulous Fall skin...

 1)  Drink Up & Eat Well:

One of the most significant first steps in treating your skin is from the inside out.

Drink plenty of fresh, clean (filtered and reverse osmosis) water. Drinking 8 glasses a day, every day, will help to flush out body toxins better thereby encouraging a healthy and balanced skin. Drinking plenty of water during the day will assist in maintaining plump cells and will keep dehydration at bay.  (If your cells become dehydrated it will show in your skin, causing any lines and wrinkles to become more pronounced).

Eat foods with healthy oils and omega fatty acids.  Fall is a season when fresh fruit and vegetables abound, so you can include Pears, Leeks, Pumpkins, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Blackberries, Grapes, Plums and Raspberries to provide Vitamins C, B, E and A, iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, bioflavonoids, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that can help to prepare your skin and body for the challenges it will face during winter and boost the skin’s immune system while preserving its quality and restoring its natural glow.

2)  Gentle Cleansing:

Now is the time to use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its vital oil barrier.  The natural oils in your skin work to balance your skin's moisture level.  Harsh cleansers will only strip these natural oils and add to your frustration of dry skin.  You will also want to avoid hot water when washing your face, instead stick with tepid or lukewarm water. (Purple Essentials' Orange & Rosemary Cleanser can help... click here)

3)  Exfoliate:

Exfoliating your skin is an important step for each season, but especially as your skin becomes drier.  Summer damage can result in cellular build-up on the skin’s surface, causing skin to look dull and be congested.  In order to effectively remove dead skin cells and leave the skin smooth, it is advisable to exfoliate regularly.  This step will prepare the skin to absorb more moisture and nourishment.  2-3 times a week will slough away dead skin while polishing the surface of your skin.  This process also increases cellular turnover and allows your other skin care products to penetrate more easily, giving them the opportunity to work more effectively.

For Body - use a natural oil-based Body Scrub or Polish. (Purple Essentials' Body Scrubs and Polishes are great for exfoliating & moisturizing).

For Face -  use a gentle face exfoliating product (avoid products with apricot kernel, walnut, almond particles, as these tend to have jagged edges when ground and can cause skin tears). (Purple Essentials' Cleansing Grains and Refining Mask are both effective and gentle exfoliators).

  4)  Adjust Moisturizers:

As the months get colder your skin needs more moisture than it did in previous seasons. Your skin does not adapt automatically to seasonal changes, and using a natural oil-based moisturizer (vs. water, silicone or alcohol) will help to balance the hydration level in your skin, while nourishing it and protecting it from the cooler temperatures.  Evaluate your skin’s needs to see if you need more moisture throughout the day.  *Tip: Lock in moisture while finishing up your bath or shower routine.  Coat your body with a light layer of (natural) Bath & Massage oil, pat dry.  (Purple Essentials' Rejuvenating Serum, Whipped Body Creme, Body Butter and Bath & Massage oils each help to nourish and hydrate your skin, naturally).

   5)  SPF – Rain or shine:

Although the Autumn sun is not as strong as it was through the Summer, it is still necessary to use your sunscreen regularly.  A sunscreen with SPF of 30+ is required.  We are so mindful during the Summer about wearing sunscreen to protect us from burning, but can easily forget the importance of a daily sunscreen throughout the Fall and Winter months. Just because it is colder outside, doesn’t mean those rays are not reaching your skin.  Another important note is that UVB (burning rays) are not the only types of rays that can damage skin.  UVA (aging) rays cause skin’s collagen and elastin fibers to break down, and these rays come from the sun as well as fluorescent lighting found indoors.  Always wear a sunscreen that is "broad spectrum", meaning it will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.
