Shaving that Handsome Face

Part 2 - Male Grooming

  • A right of passage
  • A male tradition
  • A dreaded chore
Shaving can be all of the above, when what you would like it to be is an easy and enjoyable routine... a way to attain skin that’s baby smooth, without any of the usual skin irritation, redness, ingrown hairs or burning sensation, that many men tend to feel is to be expected and tolerated, when it comes to shaving.

If you are a man looking for the mysterious secret to “the perfect shave” … you have come to the right place.  What you will learn today can save you time, money and effort… not to mention pain and irritation.  The impressive end result – smooth touchable skin, that will be ready for some cheek-to-cheek action (no one enjoys whisker burn).

Tip:  To avoid the ol’ slice’n’dice, ensure a close, clean shave and minimize drag, nicks and cuts - the direction of your beard growth should be assessed. Identify the direction of your hair growth and shave with the grain.  Pay close attention, as it can vary in spots.  The best time to determine the pattern of your beard is to run your hand along beard growth, one to three days after shaving.  You will be able to see and feel the direction of growth in each area.

If you have a heavy, coarse beard, shave against the grain only after first shaving with the grain. The hair is shorter and less likely to curl back in on itself, which can cause painful ingrown hairs.  Remember to take the time to re-apply shaving product before shaving against the grain.

Shaving Cream vs. Shaving Oil

More often than not, shaving cream can become a habit.  Maybe you have become "attached" to it?  Mostly because you and your shaving foam have history together.

Possibly you had your initial shaving lesson with your Father or even Grandfather... likely you learned to shave with traditional shaving cream, the fluffy and innocent looking foam, magically coming out of the can, accompanied by the comforting "woosh" sound... the visual-accomplishment of slathering on the white foam and then quickly removing it all with swipes/stripes. Put all of these factors together and it is understandable, why you may believe that your shaving cream is perfect for your shaving needs .

The downside to your traditional shaving foam (please don't shoot the messenger), it may not be providing you with the best glide for your razor and can actually cause your skin to become dry, dehydrated and irritated with red lumps and bumps.  Your shaving cream can even cause you to develop sensitive skin, as it is loaded with numerous, non-friendly chemicals that make it great for its visual and tactile appeal, but not so wonderful for your skin.

The key to an easy and enjoyable shave -  Shaving Oil

Using a shaving oil, such as our Purple Shaving Elixir, has multiple benefits: it gives you a great shave and healthier skin - saving you time, money and effort.
  • Shaving oil helps to maximize glide by preparing and lubricating your skin, thus minimizing drag by lifting and softening your whiskers... helping to achieve your most close and comfortable shave.
  • Shave for shave, oils are more economical.
  • Using a shaving oil allows you to see where you are shaving, helping you to get quick, precise, clean lines around a beard, sideburns or goatee.  Also helps when you’re manscaping other areas; head, chest or “undercarriage”… all places where “visibility is key” and where irritation, burning and ingrown hairs are not welcome.
  • A natural shaving oil is actually good for your skin, it helps to condition with vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants while preventing razor burn, bumps and irritation.

Tip:  It's a good idea when using shaving oil to keep skin wet during your shave. This is because water acts as a carrier for the oil, ensuring even coverage and making it go further – so don't be afraid to add more (hot) water where required.

Whichever shaving product you use, here are a few helpful tips:

1. Use a good quality razor with a fresh, sharp blade. The multi-blade cartridge razors are great, but you can still get a great shave with a disposable if you do it right. (Straight blade razors, used with a quality badger-hair brush, are making a comeback).  If the razor is sharp enough, minimal pressure will be needed for removing hair.

2. Don’t skimp on the hot water. Shave following shower-time to pre-soften the skin and open up pores.  The hot water relaxes your facial muscles, opens the pores of your skin while it softens your whiskers for more effective cutting.  If you are foregoing the hot shower, be sure to soak your face with a hot, moist facecloth for a minute or two before shaving. You also need a bowl or sink full of hot water to refresh your razor as you go.

3.  Massage shaving product into your hairs, in an upwards and circular motion, before actually bringing the razor to the skin. This will help to lift the hair follicles for a closer shave.

4. Shave with the grain, in short strokes.  Use a steady, constant motion, making each shaving stroke around 3–5 cm long. Be sure to rinse your razor in hot water after every couple of strokes.

When going for the ultimate shave, your goal is to reduce friction between your face and your razor, as much as you can.  A great shave will leave you feeling as though the razor is gliding effortlessly across your skin and hair follicles. If you can feel the razor rubbing against your skin your shaving product has failed in its most important task which is to lubricate your skin.  Natural shaving oil is the perfect lubricant for the clean, close shave you have been seeking.

The above tips and information work well for women too.

Men and the 15 Year Skin-Age Difference

Part 1 - Male Grooming

As you most surely have noticed, a man’s skin is different from a woman’s.  Aside from the most obvious ... thicker skin and course hair follicles ... there are other gender related factors that play a part.  In fact, many dermatologists proclaim that these factors are responsible for a man’s skin looking and acting about 15 years younger than the skin of a woman the same age.  Lucky guys!

Testosterone is the culprit behind their thicker (a man's skin is approximately 25% thicker than a woman’s), hairy complexion. And, compared to women, these manly men also have increased sebum (natural oils) and collagen concentrations in their skin, over women.  So what?  Well, sebum works to keep skin soft and supple, while collagen content is directly linked to the signs of skin-aging - advantage men!

However, studies show that, in general, men tend to be less conscientious about protecting their skin from sun and environmental damage; they are less-likely to apply (without nagging) SPF sunscreens and moisturizers.  In these cases, UV damage from the sun can add years of wear to a man's skin (lines, wrinkles, pigmentation spots), essentially negating the benefit of slowed innate aging.  This could be a factor in why the 15 year skin-age difference is not easily distinguished by the eye.

Sunset and Fireflies

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us". —-Alexander Graham Bell.

Last Thursday promised to be a wonderful day.  We awoke to a sweet Summer breeze, birds singing and everyone under our roof in a happy mood.  As the day progressed, our family was (I thought/imagined) eagerly looking forward to an evening under the stars, watching a movie (The 3 Amigos) in Market Square (all together)... a tradition that has been on-going each Summer.  Turns out, I was the lone soul who was keenly looking forward to the planned activity.  Teenage boys had bigger plans and did not want to "sit outside and watch an old movie" with their parents and 100+ other folks.  Meanwhile, my wonderful husband had gotten "into the zone" with website tasks and was not very interested in going either.  I will admit, I was disappointed and slightly pouty... where had my fun-family gone??

I decided to take a solitary dusk-walk through the woods and am sooooo very glad that I did!  The experience was breathtaking and these pics taken with my trusty cell phone, don't manage to do it justice.  The sultry breeze (after days of extreme heat and humidity), the harmony of sounds (birds, frogs, crickets), the welcoming scents of Summer... and then, there were the ever-changing hues and colours in the sky!  Every trail I took - each change in direction, paired with the passing of seconds, altered all that I was seeing and experiencing. The scenery, light and colours were breathtaking!  I have a feeling that experience was "my consolation prize".

... and then came the fireflies!!!  Bunches of joyful fireflies, flickering through the dimming light... Pure Joy Moments, when you least expect them.

Hoping you enjoyed a wonderful weekend, with some Pure Joy Moments of your own :)

Happy Friday!

I hope that you have been enjoying this glorious Summer, with it's abundant warmth, endless blue skies, shooting stars and super-fresh fruits and veggies.

I for one, am currently struggling with the lists of "to dos" & "should dos", when what I really want to do is... go frolic on the beach!

New posts on "Men's Grooming" will be up next week... that is, if I don't just head to the beach :)

Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit.  A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world.

Wishing you all, a wonderful Summer weekend.

Skin Soothing Mango Butter

Happy Tuesday to all :)

Vacation week definitely turned into "working vacation week", which felt very much like an oxymoron...  (exception; date-day kayaking and an impromptu, extraordinary experience - both of which I am very thankful for!)... loads of Purple Essentials new website work accomplished!   We are very excited to be nearing the final stages of completion... it is looking great and becoming a fully functional site - shopping cart and all.

Today, I thought I would post some information about one of my all-time favourite, fresh and natural ingredients that has become a luscious staple in many of our sought-after products...

Mango Butter - contains a wealth of healthy properties with multiple skin-nourishing benefits that can really do your wonders for your skin. The light, natural scent alone is an alluring reason to use it.  While its semi-solid, non-greasy, creamy-soft texture is appealing, it also works quickly to soothe and quench dry skin.

For centuries, Mango Butter has been traditionally used in the rain forests and tropics for its skin softening, soothing, moisturizing and protective properties. (The mango tree is a tropical evergreen and the nourishing butter is cold-pressed from the de-shelled fruit kernels of fresh mangoes).

It is rich in powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help to reduce the degeneration of skin cells, restore elasticity and offer a protective effect from the sun's UV radiation.  Mango Butter works as an anti-ageing ingredient; fighting free-radicals and plumping up lines and wrinkles (dermatologists often recommend Mango Butter for the treatment of lines and wrinkles, as most people who use it will notice decreased signs of ageing within 4 to 6 weeks of daily use). * Also very beneficial to scalp and hair.

There are so many beneficial ways that Mango Butter supports the skin and Purple Essentials is taking advantage of them all!  As we utilize this luxurious, pure and simple ingredient in many of our popular, fresh and natural products.

Soothe – Soften - Protect

The powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals contained in Mango Butter, allow the skin to rejuvenate and protect it’s self from the elements.  Mango butter, with it’s healing properties, can be a natural remedy for many skin conditions.
  • Effectively treats dry skin
  • Skin rash and irritation
  • Helps to quickly heal blemishes
  • Relieves itching skin
  • Reduces inflammation and redness
  • Treats small skin wounds and skin cracks
  • Moisturizes and soothes tough or rough skin
  • Prevents stretch marks during pregnancy
  • Relieves insect bites
  • Promotes healthy rejuvenated skin

From stale to rejuvenated!

This blog post has less to do with Purple Essentials' day to day business activity, and more to do with behind the scenes. That saying about “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" (and Jill, a dull girl)… well that seems to be quite reflective of how things have been going around here lately.  We have been extremely focused on getting the new website completed – day and night – even vacation weeks are being spent working at this task.  Definitely a labour of love… but as I hinted, we needed a distraction. A recent activity has managed to do just that - re-energize our batteries and sharpen our focus ... Date Day!!

Give credit where credit is due – my wonderful husband definitely deserves it for single-handedly building our new E-commerce website; design, database, coding, site security, product photography, merchant account setup and more. Yet, this past Sunday, he went ahead and planned a “much needed” Date Day!  It was meant to be a surprise, but on the Friday afternoon beforehand, while I took a break from writing the copy content for the new website, I grabbed the mail. In it I found an envelope addressed to “Christine & Graham” ... of course, I opened it.  I was prematurely SURPRISED (and maybe slightly anxious) to discover that our date was going to be a 3.5 hour kayaking lesson!!  Now I know my husband must be a good listener, as I have always professed to wanting to own kayaks; to paddle around together through the warmer months. As it turns out, it was wise to enroll us for kayaking lessons, instead of just jumped into a boat on our own. There was a lot to learn, much of it involving safety ... educated paddlers are safer, more confident paddlers :)

In the last 12 years, the number of kayakers in North America has increased greatly, with millions of active participants, according to the National Sporting Goods Association ( The numbers are almost evenly split between males (55%) and females (45%), although women seem to be the fastest growing segment.

I, for one, have been interested in kayaking due to its pure and simple appeal - the joy to surely be experienced while paddling and floating along in the solitude and peacefulness of a calm body of water, paired with the adventure of exploring.  I have always thought of it as being an opportunity for Graham and I, to expand our horizons, participate in an activity together and soak in the nature around us.

Off we went to Frontenac Outfitters for our Date Day, where we met our classmates in the “Getting Started Course”. They were a fun and friendly group, led by our accomplished paddlers; Larry  Showler (Owner)  and Leslie (teacher extraordinaire) – both Paddle Canada Certified Instructors. We were taught the basic, fundamental kayaking skills, while floating in the calm, warm waters of  beautiful Pearkes Lake... the perfect venue to enter the wonderful world of kayaking.

Our introductory lesson was focused and quite informative, filled with safety information and proper technique instruction.  An appropriate amount of caution and seriousness, tempered with good natured humour (thanks to Larry), made this course a fun experience.  With Larry guiding and instructing the group as a whole, Leslie provided special attention for any and all struggling-stragglers, taking them under her experienced and caring wing (I think each of us ended up there at one point or another during the afternoon).

Lessons we learnt:  kayaking terminology, understanding boat design and the key elements of what to look for when purchasing a kayak.  On water skills: Technique and Safety!  How to enter and exit a kayak from beach or dock (not as easy as it sounds lol).  Forward – reverse – sideways paddling techniques. And my fav! Wet-exits, how to safely exit a kayak while it is upside down (I think that I surprised everyone in the class by being the 1st to volunteer to learn/demo this technique, which entails you basically flipping your kayak over with you in it…wet and wild).

Turned out to be a very educational and FUN Date Day (Thanks Honey), filled with great experiences and lots of laughs!   Giving us food for thought as to what type of kayak(s) we will want and need to fulfill our adventure plans… while, at the same time, providing us with some much needed recharging.  What we did on our Date Day, has already improved our tomorrows :)

What will you do today?
