Key Steps to Spring Ready Skin




Part 3 - Spring Skin Prep

 

Taking inventory of your body after it has been tucked away and bundled up all Winter long, can be an eye-opening experience.  Once we acknowledge our dry - flaky - pale skin, unattended body hair and callused feet - baring our limbs and getting ready for our skin revealing wardrobe, can feel overwhelming.  Take a few simple steps and you can enjoy silky, smooth and radiant skin, just in time for your warm weather reveal.

Key steps to Spring ready skin

Body - Skin care is about more than just your face. It is essential that you provide your body's skin some extra TLC.  Just like your face, your body will benefit from three essential steps:

  1. Exfoliation -  Remove the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost surface. Exfoliating once or twice a week is usually enough to achieve improved texture and smoother skin; however, people with oily skin should exfoliate more often than those with dry skin.
     
  2. Moisturizing -  Apply skin nourishing emollients to the external layers of the skin, to aid the skin in feeling softer and more pliable.  This helps to increase the skin's moisture content by reducing evaporation.  Moisturize daily, preferably after bathing (while skin is still damp) to maximize moisture in the skin.
     
  3. Protection - Limit sun exposure.  Wear a sunscreen and avoid being in the sun through the peak-damage times (usually 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the northern hemisphere). Using skin care products that offer ultraviolet protection is one of the best ways to help keep your skin looking and feeling youthful and fresh.  Use sunscreen SPF 30+ every day and reapply regularly whenever you're outdoors for extended periods. You can also cover skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats, when outdoors.

Spring skin challenges

Do you have red or white bumps on your arms, legs or buttocks that look similar to goose bumps?  This can be due to keratosis pilaris, a genetic condition that causes extra skin cells to build up around individual hair follicles, giving you a bumpy texture and a polka-dotted appearance. 

Tip:  Application of a skin nourishing daily moisturizer can help to soften the bumps and use of an exfoliating body scrub or polish when bathing (1-2 times per week) can help to reduce the bumps even more.  (Purple Essentials Whipped Body Creme and Body Scrubs help to moisturize and exfoliate with pure and simple, skin nourishing ingredients).

 






Do your knees and elbows resemble a dry, ashy desert area?  Many people suffer from dry, ashy skin on their limb joints.  It can be helped with exfoliation and deep moisturizing.  Use an exfoliating scrub 1-2 times per week, when bathing, and follow with a deep moisturizer.

Tip: Before going to bed at night, apply a nourishing body butter (Purple Essentials Mango Body Butter works well) to the effected areas. Cut the toe area off of an old (clean) cotton sock - shimmy the remaining band of the sock over the body buttered area, to keep the Body Butter on your skin and off of your clothes and sheets. Remove in the morning.





Do your feet make that "scratchy noise" when they slide against the sheets?  Before you break out the sandals, you may want to book yourself a pedicure or do one at home.   Pay close attention to your heels and toes.  Are they dry, callused, even cracked?  Once again, the key to getting them silky-smooth, is exfoliating and moisturizing. 


Tip: Add 3 cups of warm milk and one cup of honey to a large basin, stir until blended and soak your feet for 25 minutes, massaging the liquid into your skin. 
Use a handful of a sea salt based body scrub to exfoliate dead, dry skin off of the feet.  Rinse with warm water and gently push cuticles back to the nail bed with the back of your thumb nail, and pat dry.  For a deeply moisturizing treatment apply a layer of thick body cream or body butter to feet  and cover with clean, cotton socks, sleep and remove in the morning.  (works well for hands too).




Have you neglected your body hair for weeks, even months, through the Winter?  It might be time for substantial de-fuzzing of areas that will soon see the sun.
   
Tip: Plan to do a thorough exfoliation 2 days prior to having any hair removal treatments performed (ie. waxing, sugaring etc).   Your aim is to loosen and remove dead skin cells, which will help to make hair removal easier, by lifting small hairs and removing dry skin. A great place to visit for de-fuzzing (sugaring or waxing) Solace Esthetics (Stacia Power).

Interesting fact: hair follicles begin to form during the tenth week of pregnancy when the fetus is about the size of a peanut. By week 22, there are approximately five million hair follicles all over the body, and not a single additional follicle will ever be produced from that point forward.

Spring Clean Your Skin




Spring clean your skin - find your glow.


Spring Skin Prep - part 2:  Facial Care & Cosmetics

When the seasons shift, it's time to adjust your skin care routine.  So, as we head into the warmer weather, now is the time to modify your skin care products and cosmetics to help rejuvenate your skin and brighten your complexion.

Following months of cool Winter weather and dry indoor heating your complexion may look dull and washed out.  This lack of brightness comes from a build up of dead cells.  Lucky for us, skin responds quickly to some well aimed TLC.


Key steps for a glowing Spring complexion:


Cleanse  - To detox your skin and deep clean your pores, try a clay based facial mask.  Clays offer tightening and toning properties, while drawing out impurities from the skin.




 




Exfoliate (regularly) - Exfoliating facial skin not only removes dull, dead skin cells and evens out it's overall tone and texture - the process actually helps to generates the growth of new skin cells, while lessening visible signs of sun damage and age spots. The practise dates back to ancient Egypt and has since evolved to a well researched science. Exfoliating at home is quick and easy with a gentle scrub containing tiny spherical grains.

 




Moisturize & Nourish - The dense moisturizing cream that you have been using on your face through the chilly months, may be a little too heavy for the warmer months. With increasing heat and humidity, skin can become oily, which can lead to acne and blemishes.  While moisturizing is always an important step, changing to a lighter version will help to keep your complexion clear and bright.


 




Protect - Although it might not be beach weather just yet, wearing sunscreen everyday is vital to keeping your skin looking healthy and youthful.  Wearing an SPF of at least 30 is recommended by health and skin care professionals even during the Winter months. As the warmer weather approaches it is essential to take steps to protect your skin.  If you are hoping to get a head start on your summer glow, remember that a skin damaging burn is possible even in cooler Spring weather.

**Remember to apply SPF30+ to all exposed skin, paying attention to those often missed areas: your fingers, toes, backs of ears and lips.





Makeup - With the focus on flawless, glowing skin this Spring, makeup colours should lighten up too.  Refresh your look with a luminous face and just a hint of mineral colour, with either a focus on soft eyes with sheer pastel colors and well-defined brows; bronzer for a sun-kissed glow on the cheeks and eyes; or metallic and sparkling shadows in lighter shades paired with soft pink, coral or nude shades on the lips. For daytime use a lip gloss, rather than a lipstick, and switch from black mascara to dark brown. Instead of a liquid, full-coverage foundation, move to a tinted moisturizer or mineral powder instead.

SPRING Skin Prepping



 


With the upcoming forecast of double-digit temperatures, it looks like we will all be foregoing our heavy sweaters, wool socks and winter boots - in favour of lighter layers, skin revealing pieces and toe-showing sandals. 

Out of sight-out of mind.  With our feet and limbs tucked into warm layers through the cooler months, we often don't notice the neglect our skin has endured until that warm Spring day arrives and we wish to wear short sleeves, shorts and sandals... yikes!

As you begin to shed your layers of protective clothing with the arrival of longer, warmer days, your spirits will be soaring but your skin may still be crying the Winter Blues.  Through the "Brrrr-Chilly" months, skin can become dehydrated, overheated and undernourished.  Leaving you with dry, itchy skin, rough spots, and a lack of youthful glow. 


The good news is, it doesn't take long to see that soft and supple skin re-emerge.  Start now, and you can prepare your skin for the "big reveal" in the near future.


Steps to prepping your skin for Spring:

Part 1:  Before we get to topical ways to prepare your skin for Spring - let's go right to the most long-lasting and effective way to help skin look it's best.

Nutrition is a key element to healthy skin - Spring is an ideal time to revamp your dietary habits - to detox your body/skin and increase your energy.  Here are some helpful ways that you can begin prepping your skin for Spring:


  • Drink herbal teas - this helps to increase hydration in your skin and organs while helping to detox your body. 

  • Drink green tea - substances known as catechins, which are found in green tea, can stimulate the body to burn calories, in turn decreasing body fat, while helping your organs to detoxify your blood. These same catechins are also rich in anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, giving green tea added benefits.

Life lately...



I feel like I lost my "Blogging Voice" over the past couple of months.  Lot's going on, as usual - but for some reason I have felt a little "tongue tied".

Spring weather is right around the corner. (I say this with a sly smirk, as the 1st official day of Spring has passed, yet it is still snowing here.  Enough snow already...  Bring on SPRING!).
