How to Have Healthy Winter Skin



As you can probably gather, from the changes in your complexion, your skin needs more moisture through the cool, dry months of Winter;  the air around us has less humidity to offer, while the cold winds dry-out exposed skin.  During this climactic change the moisture level in our skin quickly depletes, allowing lines and wrinkles in our epidermis to become more prominent and noticeable, while our complexion can become dry, flaky and dull. 

Some easy ways to remedy skin's Winter challenges and enjoy soft, supple skin through the coldest time of the year:

Cleanse, Face:  Cleanse daily with an effective yet gentle cleanser. (many foaming cleansers tend to strip the skin of it's protective oils, which can cause dry and flaking skin.  Sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl sulfate is a foaming chemical that strips away your natural oils and can cause more harm than good - certainly worth avoiding).  For more information on SLS click here

Exfoliate, Face:  There is a fresh-faced glow hiding under that layer of dull, dead skin cells.  The best way to uncover it is to exfoliate (gently remove the dead skin cells - 2-3 times per week, depending on skin type).  For the healthiest glow it is best to use a product that contains spherical/round beads (ie. cornmeal, jojoba beads...) vs. sharp, jagged granules (ie. apricot, walnut shell...) that can scratch and inflict microscopic tears to the skin.

Moisturize, Face: You can add moisture to your skin from the inside and out, by drinking plenty of clean water (avoid caffeine and alcohol as they create dehydrating effects in the skin and body) and applying a high quality moisturizer to facial area, neck and chest, while skin is still damp from cleansing (morning and bedtime). This will help your skin to absorb and lock in the moisturizing nutrients it needs to stay soft and supple.

Protection:  Wear your sunscreen 365 days a year.  The winter-glare reflecting off of the innocent looking white snow, can actually increase your exposure to skin damaging UVA rays.  Apply SPF 30+ to all exposed skin.  (face, neck, hands...)

Temperature:  Avoid dehydrating, dry heat by turning down your thermostat at home and on the hot water heater.  Add a humidifyer to your bedroom. Use lukewarm water to cleanse your face and turn down the hot water in your bath and shower, as high temperature water can wear down and defeat skin's protective layer, which can increase inflammation and accelerate skin's ageing process (yikes).

Body:  Whether you prefer a nice relaxing bath or a speedy shower, take time to:
  • Cleanse with a moisturizing soap or bath & shower gel (SLS free).
  • Exfoliate with a body scrub or polish, to release dead, dry skin cells that can cause the irritating dry-itch we often experience through the Winter months.
  • Moisturize, in the bath or shower by using a bath & massage oil (plant based oils vs. mineral oil), apply a thin layer of oil while in the bath or shower, after cleansing...just before you are ready to turn off the water and head for your towel.  Massage it over skin, rinse and pat dry.  This will add moisture to your skin and can often allow you to skip the body moisturizing step that is dreaded on the freezing cold days. 
  •  If you skip the bath & massage oil or just need a little extra moisture for your skin, use a body moisturizing cream or lotion, daily and as needed.  Apply while skin is still damp for the most effective and long lasting results.  Also, be sure to avoid lotions and creams with alcohol listed as being one of the first few (or any) ingredients.  The alcohol actually evaporates the product from the skin (to leave a non-greasy feeling), which contributes to dry skin and multiple applications of the product throughout the day.  A nourishing body cream or lotion made with cold pressed botanical oils may take a little time to sink into your skin, but it will also nourish and moisturize your skin for an extended period of time. (this can be a healthy step as well as saving you money in the long run).

Nasty Winter Germs ~ 5 tips to feel better



The New Year brings with it another cold and flu season, not to mention all of those other nasty winter bugs.  That tell-tale tickle in your throat let's you know that your body/immune system is preparing to go into battle against another bug... most likely a cold or flu virus.



Do you know the difference between a common cold and the flu?  A cold tends to have a gradual buildup of symptoms (congestion, sore throat, cough etc.).  With a cold you can often muddle through much of your day-to-day life.  While a flu virus tends to hit you hard and fast... fever, headache, fatigue, achy body, sore throat, congestion, cough... you may be unable to function at your day-to-day tasks... typically lasting 1 week.
 

Your immune system is the key to your recovery. 
Slow down, take good care of YOU...
 

 
Top 5 Tips:  
ease discomfort & feel better quickly:


#1.  Gargle with salt water - for quick and effective post nasal drip and/or sore throat relief, nothing beats an old-fashioned saltwater gargle.   Salt acts as a mild antiseptic, and due to osmosis, helps draws water out of mucous membranes in the throat, which helps to clear congestion.
  • Dissolve 1 tablespoon of salt in a large glass of warm water, gargle a mouthful and spit out, until glass is empty. Repeat up to four times a day. (Use sea salt if possible)

#2.  Steam your sinuses - to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a bowl of freshly boiled water - breathe through your nose. *Be cautious.  Inhale slow deep breaths. (Add 4 drops of Purple Essentials Cold & Flu Blend of pure essential oils to the hot water and this can help to reduce your congestion and discomfort) Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as helpful to ease congestion.


#3.  Blow your nose - often.  Do not "sniff" the mucous back into your sinuses.  This can actually add to your discomfort and lead to sinus and ear ache.

#4.  Drink hot liquids - coating the tissue in your throat with warm liquid provides a benefit similar to applying hot packs to inflammation and swelling on skin.

Lemon, Honey and Ginger Tea:
1-1/2 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
1/2 a lemon freshly squeezed - juice
1 tbsp honey
3 cups boiling water

Directions:
  • Boil 3 cups of water.
  • Peel ginger skin and discard, then finely grate ginger pieces until you get one-and-a-half tablespoons worth.
  • Place the grated ginger into mug and pour the boiled water over it.
  • Add lemon juice and honey. Allow to steep for 3 minutes and stir.  (If you aren't fond of ginger you can use just the lemon and honey - it will still help).
Drink 3 -4 times per day.


#5.  Sleep - Common sense dictates staying in bed or at least resting when a cold or flu virus has you down. Taking it easy leaves more energy to fight the germs and get you on the road to recovery and back to a healthy and happy state. To help drain nasal passages, try an extra pillow under your head... if the angle is uncomfortable, place a pillow between box spring and mattress (where your head lays).

Fresh start

Welcome back!  I hope that you have stayed well and enjoyed a fantastic, revitalizing time through the holidays, with people whom you adore.

I would like to start off the year with deep thanks and sincere gratitude to you, for taking time to visit here :)  I am always thankful for your support and comments.

Please forgive my blogging absence.  The lead up to Purple Essentials' Holiday Shopping Event (Pic from SNAP Kingston - Thank you Calvin White!) and Christmas became a whirlwind of tasks + activities... and then came The Terrible Trio of Winter Bugs (I will spare you the details) that created a mini "technology detox" time for me.  You know you are sick when no form of technology/media is appealing or doable. 

The New Year brings with it a fresh start ~ new beginnings and often various resolutions.  Have you made any?  I have come to learn that "Intentions" are more my style (Definition:
an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result).

This year I have decided to focus my intentions on :
Balance (in all areas) ~ Nurture (others & myself) ~ Focus (on things that really matter)... in hopes of creating a Calm & Fulfilling day to day LIFE (fingers crossed).

I will continue to dream BIG (is there any other way?) and be thankful for each joy experienced.  On that note:  As a family we have decided to adopt a new tradition. (I am sure many of you have come across this on Facebook, Pinterest etc.)

 We are starting a JOY JAR.  You take a large empty jar and everyone in the family fills it with notes, throughout the year, about GOOD THINGS that happen... then next NYE we will empty the jar and read each note, remembering all of the joy that came to us through that year.

I am very eager and excited for many BIG dreams (yours & mine) that will be coming true in 2013!
