The last couple of weeks have been a delicate dance of orchestrated chaos… that will only intensify through the next 3 weeks!

Things are on track… ingredients and packaging, have been ordered and the majority of it has arrived. The UPS man deserves a big "shout out" as he has been extra sweet this week unloading all of the heavy cartons for me (Thank YOU Ron!!). Toronto packaging trip was a whirlwind, with some great
gift packing selected.

Yesterday I spent a good portion of the day unpacking boxes, upon boxes of delightful ingredients.  I wish you could see and smell it all!

Here is just a small sampling of what has arrived:
  • Key Lime essential oil

  • Organic Cocoa Butter
  • Aloe Vera Juice,
  • Beet Root Powder
  • Vanilla Bean pieces
  • Rhassoul Clay

  • my ultimate fav, Virgin coconut oil (smells just like it sounds… rich creamy white,  FRESH coconut!)

… Next;  labels to be created, updated and ordered.

Why do we use LYE to make Natural Soap?

Recently we received an email from someone who was curious as to why Purple Essentials includes "sodium hydroxide" in our fresh & natural, hand-crafted, cold processed soaps.
 ...Well let me explain :)

Chemically speaking, soap is a salt; an acid and a base react with one another and are neutralized to form a salt/soap. A more simple explanation is: oils or fats combine with sodium hydroxide or "lye" in a process called saponification to produce soap.

Fatty Acid (Oil) + Base (Sodium Hydroxide /Lye) = Salt (Soap)

Lye is an essential component in the soap making reaction because its hydroxide ion combines with the oil or fat to form the soap. In our final product there is no lye remaining - it has all been consumed/neutralized in the saponification process - converted to glycerine and soap.

Think of it in these terms: It is a bit like using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in a cake. The purpose of baking soda mixed into the recipe is to force the cake to rise; it is converted into carbon dioxide during the baking process. In the finished cake there is no baking soda left.

Likewise, in the finished soap there is no lye remaining.

As for the main benefit of cold process soap, and the reason people enjoy it so much ... its incredible soothing properties. These soothing properties are courtesy of the glycerin that forms during the oil and lye reaction. Glycerin is one of the best known humecants, which means that is is excellent for attracting moisture to the skin; it softens skin naturally. Hand-crafted soap retains extra glycerin ... thus, extra soothing power.

Here is the low down on the Cold Process Method that Purple Essentials uses to create our fresh & natural natural soaps:
  •   The vegetable oils are heated gently.
  • Lye and water are heated separately.  When both ingredients reach the required temperature, they are (very carefully) combined.
  • When the mixture reaches the desired consistency and temperature, it is poured into a mold.
  • The soap filled molds are then "put to bed" (wrapped with blankets to insulate and allow the saponification process to occur).
  •  The bars are then removed from the mold after "setting up" - (approximately 24 to 48 hours).

  •  They are then cut, re-stacked and allowed to "cure" or dry until hard.  This can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks depending on the recipe used.

Speaking of soap... I am getting excited to head into the studio and begin whipping up the multiple batches of soap that we will have cut, wrapped and ready for the upcoming holiday/gift giving season :)

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a thoughtful Remembrance/ Veteran's Day
To all who have so generously and courageously given of themselves to help ensure our freedom ...
A heart-felt THANK YOU ~ Lest we forget.

5 weeks until Purple Essentials Holiday Shopping Event ~ Countdown is on... Stay tuned for updates...

Pampering Pumpkin Face & Hair Mask

Now that Halloween has passed, and you have no more use for that Jack-O-Lantern, here is a quick and easy, natural, pumpkin face & hair mask recipe - rich in enzymes and antioxidants that will help to brighten your skin and condition your locks in just 20 minutes. If fresh pumpkin is not available, then canned pumpkin will do.

Pumpkin is high in Vitamin A (skin healing), Vitamin C (anti-oxidant), Beta-Caratene (helps to protect skin) and Zinc (helps to increase collagen production), AND makes an excellent mask ingredient for all skin and hair types, especially environmentally effected or sensitive skin.  Pumpkin can help skin to retain its elasticity and slow the visible signs of aging, as it soothes and moisturizes, while helping the additional mask ingredients to absorb deeper into the skin and hair follicle, intensifying the results - leaving you with healthy glowing skin and hair.

Additional ingredients you will need:

Yogurt: Plain, live culture yogurt (Greek Yogurt works best) is rich in alpha hydroxy and lactic acid which helps dissolve impurities while deeply cleansing and tightening pores.

Honey: This natural humectant draws moisture to it therefore it is an excellent moisturizer and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory with cell regenerative properties, which helps to even skin tone and calm skin conditions such as acne and rosacea.

Pampering Pumpkin Face Mask

1/4 cup cooked and mashed pumpkin (if not available you can use canned pumpkin puree)

1 tablespoon honey (warm to liquefy, if needed)

2 tablespoons plain yogurt, (Greek yogurt if possible) room temperature

  • Mix honey into pumpkin puree, then stir in plain yogurt.
  • Allow to sit for 3 mins, then apply to face using mask brush or clean fingers, avoiding eye area.
  • Relax and let the mask work it’s magic, approximately 20 minutes. Wipe off using a warm wet cloth and rinse face with warm water, apply your moisturizer (this will help to lock in the beneficial effects of the mask).

*Repeat this weekly treatment to protect your skin from the drying effects of winter. Left over mask can be kept in the fridge for up to a week.

Pampering Pumpkin Hair Mask

This recipe can be used to create a deep conditioning hair mask:
  •  add 4 Tbsp of virgin olive oil to the above mixture and apply to dry hair
  • cover with shower cap for 30 minutes
  • wash out with shampoo - condition and style.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
