What is your summer scent?

Everything seems to refresh and relax as Summer arrives. Blossoms bloom, while sweet fragrances flood the air.  Our moods are lighter and more joyful.  Things sound, look and taste more vibrant.  As we crave lighter meals, it only makes sense that the scents we wear should lighten up too.
Of course it would be best to adorn yourself with 100% natural and organic aromas and perfumes, for their non toxic ingredients and beneficial aromatherapy properties. When that isn't possible, you can still make a choice to wear your favourite commercial perfume or cologne less often and in lighter doses - to help limit everyone's exposure to the negative effects, that the chemicals used in synthetic perfumes can cause.

Sweet Scents of Summer
Light & Airy
Crisp & Clean
Soft & Sultry

A variety of the following scents can be blended to create a unique and inviting perfume or cologne.  Look for the ones that appeal to you when choosing your Summer Scent.
Citrus: tangerine, mandarin, pink grapefruit, lemon, lime, lemon verbena, bergamot.
Floral: gardenia, jasmine, tuberose, rose geranium, lavender, ylang ylang.
Earthy: cardamom, cedar wood, juniper, sage, sandalwood, vanilla.

Tips to getting the most
out of your summer scent:
  • Tap perfume/scent onto your skin. Rubbing it into the skin can cause the molecules to rupture before they have had a chance to set and release their aroma.
  • Apply scent to pulse points (neck, inner elbow, wrists, behind knees) for longer wear time.  The heat of your skin and slight moisture helps to release the scent.

  • Store perfume in a cool, dark spot for a longer shelf life. Light, heat and humidity can breakdown and alter the scent.

  • Scent lingers longer on hydrated skin. One more reason to keep your skin soft and supple with a hydrating moisturizer.

  • Avoid spicy scents on super hot summer days. Full/substantial notes (spicy to musky) are amplified by heat and humidity, and can become overpowering.

  • Spray scent into the air, and walk through mist, to avoid staining white/light clothing and to create a subtle layer of fragrance.

  • Wait a few minutes after applying SPF , before applying your scent of choice. Too close together and the scent can be altered.

*Purple Essentials has 3 all natural perfumes on the development table right now.

Purple News...

What a hectic time around here.  Many irons in the fire.  Lots of Purple Essentials excitement in the air!  There are BIG  things ahead... and each step taken, each effort made, is bringing it all closer to fruition :)

Website - Turns out the photos we took on our 1st photography adventure, needed to be set up differently.  That meant 100+ shots to be redone.  And we did do it all over again, with new lighting tools to boot.  Still, the product pics did not turn out as "clean" as we would like.  So we are going to hold our 3rd - hopefully perfect, shoot over the weekend.

Of course, Suzy Lamont's shots are lovely.  and we look forward to featuring them!

Pages have been created for information + products.  A database + shopping cart, are now in the works.  There are multiple coding challenges, that need to be addressed before moving on to the next step.  Thank you to my wonderful husband, who has been teaching himself new computer languages and conquering each challenge that arises. (He is amazing!).

We are seeking a Graphic Designer to add some creative touches.

In a nutshell - Purple Essentials' NEW website will be launching... soon... sooner than later :)

Some fun things ahead:

Strawberry Body Scrub - (yes, the famous one that sells out each strawberry season).  We will be off to pick the berries as soon as they are ripe and ready.  And a day will be set aside to whip up the fresh, juicy strawberry body scrub.   Mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm.
We will be taking orders, so feel free to let us know if you would like a jar set aside for you.

Insect Repellent -  We will be blending our natural and effective bug deterrent.  The mosquitoes and black flies don't enjoy the scent, but you will ;)

Citronella Soy Wax Candles -  Great for having on your patio to keep the bugs at bay.

Pamper Parties - Just putting the finishing touches on The Purple Pamper Party.  What a great way to see, touch and smell, our Pure & Simple - Fresh & Natural Products!  Info coming soon.

Weekend ahead ~ wishing you a fabulous weekend!

30 Truths Learned

We all know that girls "talk".  I find that as I mature (get older) the girl-talk becomes more focused on life, learning and experiences, not so much about boy-talk or who did what.  Recently some friends and I got to discussing "Truths Learnt/learned" ... everyone offered up two or three lessons learned through our lives.  Some were humorous, while others were poignant.  That experience has me thinking about my own list of truths learned (sometimes quickly and easily, while others took repeated reminding).

Here are is a list of 30 Truths I have Learned:
  1. Everything changes (like it or not).
  2. Everyone has something that they deal with (sometimes it is hidden, sometimes it's on display).
  3. Parents are human too (I didn't fully appreciate my Mom & Dad until I became a parent).
  4. Never give up (just putting one foot in front of the other, over and over, will always get me further).
  5. Music and lyrics can move me and impact my life (repeatedly).
  6. LMNO is not a letter in the alphabet (one of my kindergarten aha moments).
  7. Wants and Needs are different (I want a lot, but need very little).
  8. True friends are worth their weight in gold (cliche, but so true).
  9. A woman's body is meant to have lumps and bumps (although I may wish for less of them).
  10. My 22 year old body was lovely, after all.
  11. Rewards, Positive Reinforcement and Encouragement are each powerful tools.
  12. Life really is a journey (hoping for the extended version).
  13. Appreciate each day and each moment, as it comes.
  14. LOVE embodies the deepest pain and the utmost pleasure.
  15. It is always possible to find the good in a person.
  16. Gossip hurts everyone.
  17. A good belly-laugh, or uncontrollable giggle, can make all the difference.
  18. Life doesn't always follow "My Plan", but often works out better.
  19. Strive for JOY (defn: “ a vivid emotion of pleasure arising from a sense of well-being.”), daily.
  20. Best to not assume anything (still working on this one...).
  21. Not necessary to follow trends, better to create my own.
  22. My ability to listen to someone on the telephone and have someone else speaking within close range, declines with age.
  23. Worry and Hate are each wasted energy.
  24. My "gut feeling" is right 9 out of ten times (I need to listen to it).
  25. Everything in moderation (works well for me).
  26. Brave, Courageous and Love, are all action words.
  27. When listening to a woman speak, it is important to decipher the meaning.
  28. When listening to a man speak, it is important to realize they speak quite literally (no need to look for hidden meaning - that can make things go wrong).
  29. Time spent in the woods with nature, always helps.
  30. Aha moments, make up a good life!

Why not make your own list? ... I would love to hear some of your Truths Learned.

Long Weekend - Passion Lemonade

Fresh Lilacs = Big smiles

I imagine many of you will be busy this Victoria Day long weekend (Cdn), looking for ways to be outdoors and take advantage of the great weather ahead.

Whatever you are up to, wishing you a glorious time.  Enjoy!

This looks like the perfect weekend to whip up a thirst quenching pitcher of Iced Passion Tea Lemonade (a SB summertime fav).  Here is a quick and easy recipe, sans the Sugar Syrup, to keep it on the healthy side.  Great for patio time! (Yes, you can add your favourite LCBO addition to it).

Ingredients:
8 cups of water
3 Passion Tea bags
1 Litre of Lemonade
1 Lemon (sliced)

Directions:
Boil water in kettle or pot to a rolling boil, turn off heat, once boiling/ bubbling has subsided add tea bags.

Allow to steep for 3-5 minutes, then remove tea bags and discard (in compost container).

Allow Passion Tea to cool to room temperature

Add 1 slice of fresh lemon to tall glass

Fill glass 1/2 way with lemonade and 1/2 with Passion Tea, add lemon slice and ice, if desired.

Combine remaining lemonade and tea in a pitcher and refrigerate.

Happy Long Weekend!

Blissful Blueberry Mask

Every once in a while we all need a little blueberry bliss!  One of my favourite treats is to enjoy fresh (wild or organic when possible) Blueberries… all by themselves or on breakfast oatmeal, in yogurt, in baked goods, in salads, or this delicious recipe Goat Cheese Tart with carmalized onions and blueberries… the list can go on and on.  These berries are supercharged with anti-aging phytochemicals, and packed with Vitamin C… good for your immune system and your skin.

Try this is PURPLE (pure & simple) delight for your skin.
Quick and easy to prepare, this mask is perfect for soothing and rejuvenating the skin.  It promotes cellular renewal, protects cells from the damaging effects of the environment, and helps to hydrate your skin. Don’t be afraid to lick your lips with this mask on... mmm mmm good!

Directions:
  • Place 1/2 cup of fresh blueberries (wild or organic when possible) into blender or food processor, (a mini food processor works well for this recipe)

  • Add the fresh juice of half a lemon

  • Blend for a few seconds

  • Add one generous Tablespoon of raw honey

  • Add 2 Tablespoons of plain (Greek) yogurt

  • Add 2 Tablespoons of oatmeal (old fashioned)

  • Pulse until the mixture is processed into a smooth, creamy paste.

Apply with mask brush or clean fingers, to face and neck area (avoiding eyes), in thick layer, and leave on for 10-15 minutes.

Rinse off with warm water and soft cotton cloth.

 * Keep unused portion in airtight container in refrigerator for 3-5 days

Every night?! Who does that??

Many of us are overloaded with busy schedules and responsibilities... the last thing we feel like doing at the end of a long day, is (not that... tsk tsk) performing a nightly skin care routine. Be honest, do you make the time to cleanse and moisturize your face at the end of each day?  This practise really can make a difference in your complexion and helping your skin to retain it's youthful glow.

Why do we need to be committed to nightly skin care?  Think of all that your face/skin is exposed to throughout your day... dust, dirt, greasy smog, environmental pollutants, sweat, bacteria... not to mention the layers of products that you may have applied earlier in the day... moisturizer, SPF, foundation, concealer, blush, etc.  Cleansing before bedtime allows your skin a chance to breathe and hydrate, while your body goes into "rest & repair mode" as you sleep.  If you don't cleanse thoroughly and consistently, your skin can become dull and congested (clogged pores, blemishes, blackheads) while showing premature signs of ageing.

The key is to keep it simple.  Create a nightly cleansing ritual that you can stick to.  It doesn't need to be complicated with a counter full of expensive products, but it does have to offer some element that you enjoy... scent, texture, ease of application... even if its the pretty bottle that entices you to enjoy the product. Find whatever it takes to make it more likely that you will faithfully follow your night time cleansing routine.  I have a friend who makes listening to a favourite song on her Ipod part of her nightly face care routine.  Ear phones in, she has her face cleansed and moisturized by the end of one track... and some dance moves performed.

Process:
  1. Cleanse nightly.
  2. Exfoliate every 2nd or 3rd evening, depending on your skin type (Skin Type Quiz - click here)
  3. Tone (following cleanser) optional - if you really find the cleansing routine a challenge and are discouraged by multiple products and steps, you may wish to skip Toner, or do it every 2nd evening. If you enjoy the Toner step, use it again in the AM prior to moisturizing.
  4. Moisturize while skin is still damp, to help lock in moisture.
  5. For anyone who wants to take that extra step towards fabulous skin, apply a Facial Mask 1 time per week.
In the morning, just rinse your face with some luke warm water and a wash cloth, apply moisturizer and SPF...

Tips:
  •  Choose a gentle skin cleanser, one that will not disturb your natural moisture barrier.
  •  Use finger tips to apply cleanser to face, in upward and circular motion, gently massaging product into skin. This will help to lift the tiny facial hairs and allow product to get deep into pores.
  • Apply moisturizers and serums, from thinnest to thickest formulations.  Applying a thicker formulation first may prevent the thinner products from penetrating deep into the layers of skin, where they best work their magic.

When your head hits the pillow, know that you have taken steps to nourish and nurture your skin... steps that will  pay off for your complexion, daily and years down the road.

* Remember it takes 21 days to form a habit - stick with it.

Childhood memory - comfort food

When I was a little girl, growing up in Montreal, my Mother would bake a delicious, old-fashioned pan cake for our family. This cake definitely falls into the comfort food category. The treat itself is a wonderfully tender and light vanilla sponge cake. What sets it apart, is the lovely, crunchy, broiled caramel and coconut topping.

Funny story; I have a vivid memory of my busy Mom whipping up this mouthwatering delight to bring to a get-together, and then heading off to get herself ready - leaving the scrumptious cake to cool on the counter.  Soon after, my Dad came across the freshly baked dessert sitting unattended, and skillfully picked at the carmelized topping... I am sure he started off intending to eat only an "undetectable amount", but this cake is just too good!  Eventually, unable to help himself, he managed to peel off and devour much of the chewy frosting. When my Mother returned to the kitchen, all dolled up, ready to pack up her cake and go... she found it almost bare.  You can imagine what happened next ;)

Lazy Dazy Cake

It has been awhile since I have thought of, or baked, this delectable cake, but something triggered my memory and I decided to whip it up for our Sunday family dinner.  Let's just say, no one even dared to pick at the topping before it was served (wink), and everyone wanted seconds.

This may not be the healthiest dessert, but I do believe "everything in moderation".
So easy to prepare and always a favourite of those who have tasted it.

I would love to hear your about your favourite comfort recipes... please do share.

Lazy Dazy Cake

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons milk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat eggs for 4 minutes with electric mixer on high. Add sugar and vanilla, continue beating until light and fluffy. Add flour mixture.
  3. In a sauce pan, bring 1 cup milk and 2 tablespoons butter to a boil. Add to batter and beat until combined.
  4. Pour batter into 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 min-60 minutes - * until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  5. To make the frosting: In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, coconut, 6 tablespoons butter and 4 tablespoons milk. Heat and stir until butter is melted and mixture is smooth. Pour over cake as soon as it comes out of the oven. Put cake in the oven under the broiler and bake 3 to 4 minutes, or until icing is light brown. *Do not walk away, it can go from perfect to burnt all too quickly.
