Lips ~ Tips & Tricks

Soft and pink lips are an important part to a healthy and alluring smile. Nurturing your lips is just as important as caring for the rest of your skin. Lips need regular hydration from the inside and out, as they don't have many natural defenses of their own and can be damaged from the dehydrating effects of; the elements, petroleum based lip products and a lack of water in the body.

Keep your lips looking and feeling their best
with these simple tips

Tip #1  Drink 1-3 litres of water, daily.  Staying hydrated from the inside will help to keep your body systems running smoothly, and help to keep your skin and lips from drying out.  Quick and easy way to give you an idea of just how much water you should be drinking
Click here . (Divide your water intake up throughout the day - do not drink all at once).

Tip #2  Moisturize and protect your lips, all year long.  Apply a natural lip balm with an SPF factor of 30 or higher, before stepping out into the elements.  This will help to protect your lips from the sun, wind, acid rain, heat and cold.

Tip #3  Don't be a "habitual lip licker".  Many of us have been in the habit of licking or chewing on our lips, at one time or another = ouch! The result is often red, irritated, chapped lips.  Saliva contains digestive enzymes that can break down the protective barrier of your lips, skin. Solution - keep your lips moist with a soothing lip balm... apply as often as needed to keep moist.  Once again natural lip butter is best.  You are going to be licking those lips and ingesting much of what is on them. (Some drug store brands actually have specific chemicals in the lip balm that can dry out your lips.  Which means, you will be back to purchase more sooner than later).

Tip #4  Optimize your beauty sleep by incorporating a humidifier into your bedroom.  Turn on your humidifier before you retire for the evening (be sure to change or clean the filter regularly).  This will help to replace moisture in the air, which will benefit your lips, skin, hair and immune system.

Tip #5  Use a nourishing Lip Polish to remove dry skin -  Apply 1-2 times per week.  This treatment will help remove dead and dry skin, while moisturizing and nourishing your lips.

Try this fresh & natural - pure & simple
(very PURPLE)
recipe.

Sugar & Honey Lip Polish - Two ingredients are all you will need to prepare this very effective (yummy) lip treatment. Honey is a "flavourable" alternative to petro-based products (think Vaseline etc...) It acts a moisturizer, lubricant, soothing anti-inflammatory agent. While the sugar crystals create a gentle exfoliating effect. Helping to remove dry, chapped skin.  Just think, if you happen to ingest some of this lip polish, no harm - no foul. Just mmmm mmmm good.

Directions:  Combine 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon sugar (white or brown) ... in a small, sterile container. Mix together until it has a smooth consistency. Add a couple of drops of olive or vegetable oil for more glide, if needed. *Do not heat honey as this can cause the sugar granules to melt and render them less effective.

Apply with a clean finger: To dry lips and gently massage in circular motion.
Leave lip polish on lips for 1 minute and then wipe off with warm wash cloth.
Finish off with a dab of honey, to your smooth lips. (honey also acts as a natural humectant, pulling moisture from the air to your lips).

* Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.  Discard if it begins to separate or changes scent.

Thank you so much for visiting and for all of your feedback :)  So happy to know that you are enjoying these posts.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Have you enjoyed one lately??

How can I explain pure joy moments?  I am hoping that you experience PJ moments, daily, weekly, monthly... this way you will know of which I speak.  I have experienced stretches of time where these delightful moments have seemed in short supply, and then out of the blue, an amazing, pure joy moment arrives!! You can not plan these moments, they are by nature, unpredictable. They often sneak up on you and you may not even realize what has happened, until the magnificent moment subsides. There is that breath-taking rush of happiness, a blooming warmth within your body, a smile that you can not contain - one that ignites in your eyes and lights up your face! Occasionally an intensely moving, pure joy moment will bring on a wave of goosebumps or even happy tears. The varying intensity of these unique moments, each bring with them a release of natural endorphines (endogenous morphine) produced by our brains that induce a feeling of blissful euphoria. Mmmmmmm!  Beyond the feelings of elation, these sweet endorphines help to activate cells in our bodies that are good for our health. Cells that enhance our immune system, reduce stress, relieve pain, and slow the ageing process. (Another high-five for PJ moments)

These often subtle, yet remarkable moments come in all shapes and sizes, as an antecedent to varying degrees of pleasure; spontaneous happiness! The one thing that all of these marvellous moments have in common - they require us to be present... living in the instant. Being mindful of where we are and what we are doing, in order to be able to fully experience their gift. This may sound silly, but how often do you find yourself performing a task or partaking in an event by rote?  Whether it's driving, picking up a latte, folding laundry, grocery shopping, banking, walking the dog, sitting through family dinner, even attending a business meeting... being present isn't always as easy as it sounds.  It often takes a conscious effort and a bit of practise, for us to slow down and enjoy these moments.

A multitude of experiences can trigger a pure joy moment.  Everything, and anything, from: being the recipient of some unexpected good news, seeing a baby smile or take some wobbly steps, petting an animal, experiencing a glorious sunrise or sunset, the first tantalizing taste of a decadent dessert or wine, seeing your favourite band live, winning an award, a first kiss or soul-touching love session, hitting a perfect drive in golf, accomplishing a mental or physical challenge, a sensory-stimulating convertible ride, receiving an unexpected gift, feeling proud of someone dear to you, stolen moments, accomplishing a goal, doing something thoughtful for an unsuspecting someone, an exquisite meal - a remarkably simple meal, reconnecting with someone you have missed, being on the receiving end of good fortune and luck, sharing a belly laugh... to sitting back and realizing, just how much you enjoy the company that you are keeping.

It was during a tranquil, late afternoon hike through our local conservation area a couple of days ago, that I was pleasantly surprised with an abundance of these bliss-filled moments.  The temperature was above zero. The sights, sounds and scents of impending Spring were in the air.  The light of the late afternoon sun produced lingering, seductive colours.  Pure and simple moments that I almost walked right by (being in a hurry)... but allowed myself to stop and enjoy.  Brilliant moments that left me absolutely in love with life! I find that pure joy moments evoke deep feelings of gratitude in me and make my world go around.

When you slow down and take everything in, it might be a pleasant surprise to discover just how many of these extraordinary moments are awaiting you.

The colours and shape of the ice flow = stunning.

Tips & Tricks

Through my extensive and enduring love-affair with natural beauty ingredients and products, I have collected a treasure trove of tips & tricks that I am eager to share with you.
My plan/intent, is to offer an on-going, Tips & Tricks blog post (aiming for weekly)...

From our hair to our toes...
there are many, many ways to
enhance our natural beauty,
that can be pure & simple,
enjoyable and even fun.
While helping to save time and money.

Let's begin with 5 tips/tricks
that are oil related
(remember plant based oils are good for your skin - mineral and petroleum based oils can cause your pores to clog and your skin to react).

#1.
Quick and easy way to avoid that "brrrrrrrr-chilly" feeling when moisturizing after a warm bath or shower.

  • Use a bath and massage oil as your final step in the bathing process, to lock moisture into your skin. This way you don't need to stand naked and freezing, to apply your moisturizing body cream or lotion.  Just before you are ready to turn off the tap, pour a small amount of oil into your palm, rub hands together and smooth a light layer of oil all over your body... take a second to massage in and voila!  Quick rinse, pat dry with soft towel and you will be ready to go. (If tub becomes slippery, wash area with a small amount of shampoo before turning off water).

# 2:
Cleanse with gusto!  Most cleansers are unable to remove all product from your skin with one application, if you wear SPF 30+, full-coverage foundation or silicone based primer.  While washing twice can strip away your natural sebum that helps to protect your skin and maintain it's suppleness.  An effective alternative (the Super Hero of all cleansers);

  • Use a cleansing oil. Massage cleansing oil over your face (dry) it will help to dissolve dirt and product. Allow it to do it's work... 30-60 seconds... then rinse off with a warm, wet wash cloth.

  • Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. Not only does your natural oil help to lubricate, it also helps to heal, moisturize and protect your skin so that it may function properly. When you strip your skin of its sebum, which can occur when using harsh cleansers or using the wash and repeat method, it goes into overdrive, trying to create more oil. Which can lead to oily skin, clogged pores, whiteheads, blackheads, inflammation and irritation.

  • Do not be worried about applying oil to your face.  A plant based oil, alone, will not cause you blemishes, pimples, cysts, zits, blackheads or whiteheads...these are a result of several different influences including; hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of these factors.

#3:
Remove eye makeup easily, while conditioning your lashes,

  • Dampen a cotton pad, for each eye, with warm water, squeezing out excess.  Apply small amount of oil based cleanser to pad, work into pad (as the oil will want to sit on top of the damp surface) with clean finger tip.  Apply one pad to each eye lid and gently press onto eye area... allow to sit for 30 seconds (the oil will dissolve eye makeup, even water proof and long wearing mascaras) gently wipe cotton pad in a circular motion around eye, cleansing eye lid and lashes.  Flip pad over to utilize clean side and wipe away any smudges.

  • Lashes are hair and they need some TLC to keep them lush, supple and soft. One of the best ways to condition your lashes is to applying a natural oil to them... this cleansing method will leave your lashes well conditioned and help them to grow full and healthy while preventing breakage.

#4.
Avoid ingrown hairs along bikini line.  Ingrown Hairs, occur when the end of the hair shaft is shaved or broken off, resulting in a sharp edge that curls back into the same hair follicle it grows out of, eliciting an inflammatory response (redness, itchiness, and/or raised infected area).

  • Apply contents of a Vitamin E capsule (puncture with a pin, or snip off end), to the area following shaving or waxing. Massage into the area and this will help to prevent ingrown hairs and resolve irritation.

    #5.
    Protect your manicure and pedicure.

by applying a drop of oil to freshly polished nails.
    • The oil will act as a buffer to the fresh polish, helping to avoid any dents or scratches to the polish, and can be wiped off when polish is 100% dry.

    • There is no nail polish that is TOTALLY natural but if you are going to wear polish, the best thing to look for in nail polish is one that is "Three-Free," meaning free of toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde — all known carcinogenic ingredients.

    • Take a step toward reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals, without giving up a your glam! The majority of nail care products contain a large amount of serious toxins in their ingredients, and your standard nail polish is basically nothing more than a refined version of automobile paint. Sure these products make your nails look gorgeous, but they contain toxic chemicals (dibutyl pthalate, formaldehyde, toluene), that can stay in your system and generate internal toxicity.  While not entirely free of chemicals (it'd be great to have an organic nail polish at some point!), at least using natural nail polish alternatives such as Zoya, Butter London, Sante, Priti, Scotch Naturals (water based polish),  if you must have gorgeous, well-groomed nails, ensures that you’re not absorbing the worst offending ingredients. (We do not want to give up our mani-pedis!)

Hoping that you find these tips & tricks useful.
I would love to hear about any time-tested tips and tricks that you swear by...
and look forward to sharing additional jewels from my treasure trove
    next week :)

    Wishing you a wonderful weekend

    How do I love thee?

    Natural beauty ingredients,
how do I love thee, let me count the ways...

I love the sight of fresh & natural ingredients, used to create natural personal care treatments or products.  The vibrant colours and shapes of Mother Nature's bounty, offering us an abundance of opportunities to nourish and heal our body, skin and hair.

I love the scents of natural ingredients. Sweet and spicy aromas of ripe fruits and vegetables, pure essential oils, freshly ground herbs and grated spices. Next time you have a fresh fruit or vegetable in front of you, close your eyes and heighten your senses, inhale deeply... no perfume or chemical fragrance can come close to the olfactory response you have when inhaling and registering a purely natural scent.

    Fresh Organic Strawberries

    Fresh Lime

    Fresh Ginger

I love the variety of textures that natural ingredients and products feature.  Juicy and creamy blended fruits and vegetables, to silky-smooth honey powder, sticky soft brown sugar... each helping to soothe and nurture our skin and hair.

    Mashed Kiwi

    Mashed Banana

    Honey Powder

    Organic Brown Sugar

I love the taste of natural ingredients.  Even though the context of using them is topically, every now and then a drip or drop may land close to our lips... and isn't it wonderful to know that everything is edible and more often than not, yummy!

    Most of all, I love the effects and the benefits that using natural ingredients and products provides;
    • Reducing/limiting exposure to harmful chemicals.
    • Infusing skin with naturally occurring anti-oxidants and vitamins.
    • Support healthy cell growth.
    • Providing long-lasting moisture to help keep our skin and hair supple and healthy.

    Oh, natural beauty ingredients,
the ways that I love thee
    are numerous and infinite!

    Life's Idioms

"Pure and simple", the basis for Purple Essentials.  This past week, I find myself wishing that my life was a little more of both.  Isn't it kind of funny how this can happen?  You can be coasting along feeling fabulously content, thinking you have everything under control. Then boom, life bestows upon you, one of it's all-time favourite idioms... "when it rains, it pours".

I have learnt, wholeheartedly, "things will improve with time", you just need to "hang in there" and continually "put one foot in front of the other".  That "life is filled with ups, downs", challenges and growth opportunities, while character and personal strength are continually built. Each time we manage to successfully manoeuvre through a rough patch, growth has been achieved. (Thank goodness!)

If another of life's idioms is true,"bad things happen in 3's", then I am done with this set and ready for one of my favourite idioms, "good things come in spades"!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
