Avocado & Banana Hair Repair Mask

Pure and Simple to prepare.  This hair treatment will help to repair dry, damaged hair, while it deeply nourishes and adds a glossy shine... leaving you with lovely locks.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Application Time: 20-30 minutes

Equipment: Small bowl - fork - spoon - comb - 2 x towels - re-usable shower cap.

Ingredients: remember to use local and organic ingredients when possible.

  • 1 ripe and ready avocado

  • One ripe and ready banana

  • 1 egg yolk

  • 2 tablespoons Greek style yogurt

  • 2 tablespoons virgin olive oil

Storage: For optimal results, it is best to use up all of this hair mask when freshly prepared, share with someone special if you have extra. Store unused mask in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Avocado and banana naturally oxidize and darken in colour. This will not affect the mask but I recommend scooping off any brown section (which will be the top layer).

Directions:
Take your ripe avocado and carefully slice it lengthwise, twisting it gently to separate the halves. Use a spoon to remove the pit. (Place one of the halves into an air tight container to use later for the Skin-Soothing facial mask... or a healthy snack).

Remove the pulp of the avocado with a spoon, placing it into your bowl.

Mash avocado with the fork until it resembles a creamy paste... it can take awhile to mash all of the lumps out, it is worth it as it helps to release more of the natural antioxidant oils.

Slice up banana and mash with fork until smooth consistency, add to mashed avocado and blend.

  • Add lightly beaten egg yolk and blend into mixture.
  • Add yogurt and blend until fully incorporated and mixture has creamy consistency.
  • Add the virgin olive oil and blend into mixture until it is fully incorporated.

Application: Apply avocado mask to dry hair that you will be washing, following mask application.
    • Cover your shoulders with an old towel, to avoid any spillage.
    • Comb through hair to make it knot and tangle free.
    • Remove a palmful of mask from bowl and apply it to roots and scalp, working your way down to the ends of your hair.
    • Use your fingers to work the mask into your scalp and hair (using a comb will decrease the amount of product that penetrates the hair shaft, so use your fingers for this part).
    • *If you tend to have an oily scalp, apply this mask to the lower half of your hair, concentrating on the ends.
    • Apply a second coating to ends if you have particularly dry ends.

    • Slick hair back, twist and clip up, if you have long hair.
    • Pull on your trusty re-usable shower cap (for environmental purposes).
    • Wrap a large towel over shower cap to create heat retention, which will increase the effectiveness of your hair mask. (You do not want to heat with hair dryer, as this can cook the mask - yikes).
    • Sit back and relax for 20-30 min.

    • Place a piece of heavy duty paper towel, over drain to catch any large pieces of the mask.
    • Rinse hair thoroughly in lukewarm water (again, no hot water to avoid cooking the mask).
    • Shampoo and condition as usual - finish with a cool water rinse.
    • Air dry for best results.
Apply every 3 weeks for deep conditioning.

    Skin-Soothing Avocado Facial Mask

Pure and Simple to prepare.  This skin-soothing mask will help to nourish your skin, while it brightens your complexion.

    Preparation Time: 5 minutes
    Application Time: 20 minutes

Equipment: Small bowl - fork - spoon

Ingredients: remember to use local and organic ingredients when possible.

    • 1 ripe and ready avocado

    • 1 egg yolk

    • 2 tablespoons Greek style yogurt

    • 2 teaspoons honey (warm in bath of hot water to liquify)

Storage: For optimal results, it is best to use up all of this mask when freshly prepared, share with someone special if you have extra. Store unused mask in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Avocado naturally oxidizes and darkens in colour. This will not affect the mask but I recommend scooping off any brown section (which will be the top layer).

    Directions:
Take your ripe avocado and carefully slice it lengthwise, twisting it gently to separate the halves. (place one of the halves into an air tight container to use later for the Hair Repair Mask... or a healthy snack).

Remove the pulp of the avocado with a spoon, placing it into your bowl.

Mash avocado with the fork until it resembles a creamy paste... it can take awhile to mash all of the lumps out, it is worth it as it helps to release more of the natural antioxidant oils.

          • Add the honey and mix gently.
          • Add lightly beaten egg yolk and blend into mixture.
          • Add yogurt and blend until fully incorporated and mixture has creamy consistency.

Application:   Apply avocado mask to skin that is freshly cleansed.  To avoid "goopy hair", pull hair back off of face and apply avocado mixture using a clean mask brush or a cotton pad. Dab generous amount onto forehead, nose and chin, working the mask out to your hair line. Sit back, relax (no where to go looking like that ;) )

Works wonders on men's skin too :)

Remove mask after 20 minutes, with a warm damp cloth. Pat face dry and admire the results.

          Fresh & Natural Mask Ingredients

Before we begin with the actual recipes and directions, here are the ingredients that you will want to have on hand, in order to prepare the Skin-Soothing Avocado Facial Mask and the Avocado Banana Hair Repair Mask:

Avocado (organic and ripe, looks blackish green when ripe ) - An exotic fruit with so much to offer; rich in antioxidants and an abundance of skin revitalizing minerals, enzymes, vitamins and essential fatty acids (Zinc, Vitamins A,B,C,D,E,K, Potassium, Lecithin and Sodium Magnesium...)

Banana (organic when possible) - is one of the most nourishing fruits available because they contain large quantities of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine, and vitamins A, B (folic acid), and E.  They provide emollient and soothing effect helping to bind moisture to skin and hair. (Use a ripe/browning banana for these masks).

Egg (organic and locally harvested when possible) - For these masks we are going to use only the hydrating and skin nourishing egg yolk, as it is rich in Vitamin A, B5, Sulfur, Choline and Lutein... all of which help to prevent free radical damage while promoting healthy skin cell functions. (You can use egg whites for a mask that offers a tightening effect, but also offers much less hydration to the skin).

Greek Style Yogurt (organic if possible, plain unflavoured) - Why Greek Style Yogurt over regular yogurt?  Because this yogurt has been strained to remove excess water and whey and as a result is much thicker and creamier than regular yogurt.  For eating or topical use, it provides twice the amount of protein of regular yogurt and loaded with lactic acid, vitamins + minerals which help to treat dehydrated skin and slough off dead skin cells.

Honey (organic and local if possible) - I could go on and on about how honey is one of natures greatest offerings for our health and skin care - I will offer up additional noteworthy honey info in a future blog post.
Why use local honey vs. grocery store big brand honey?  Well, honey is big business and much of the honey we are currently offered in the grocery isles is "funny honey" from China (honey mixed with copious amounts of high-fructose corn syrup + illegal sweeteners, antibiotics and pesticide residues is often relabelled to hide its place of origin)  When you have time, this is an informative food safety article
A telling quote from the article, "In many cases, consumers would have an easier time deciphering state secrets than pinning down where the honey they're buying in groceries actually came from".  An additional article with a Canadian focus. Read this Globe and Mail honey-laundering article
You can avoid falling into the "funny honey" trap by purchasing locally harvested organic, raw honey.  By doing this, it helps to reduce your carbon footprint, helps your local bee farmers business and your community's economy all while providing you with quality honey, rich in nutrients and healing properties.  Natural honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant, cleansing, toning and moisturizing properties for your skin/health. It helps to fights infection and aids tissue healing but also helps reduce inflammation and scarring.

Virgin Olive Oil (organic when possible) - A nutrient rich, hypoallergenic way to moisturize skin and hair while providing effective antioxidants, like Vitamins A and E that help to repair and renew.  Penetrating deep into the skin and providing a long-lasting shield of moisture, helping to keep skin smooth and supple, while helping to fight free radicals and encourage healthy skin cells.  When used on hair and scalp, olive oil can be considered two products: a deep penetrating conditioner and a dandruff controller.

          Ripe & Ready

Recently I had planned to "host" a fellow-blogger, who is very creative (and an all around magnificent woman/friend), for an afternoon tutorial of whipping up a fresh & natural Winter Skin-Soothing face mask, which we intended to include on our perspective blogs. It promised to be a fun-filled afternoon, until I had to cancel due to photography equipment still lingering in the studio, for impending retake pics for some of the products for the website.

In preparation for our venture, I had picked up some gorgeously green, organic avocados, some fine-looking organic bananas, along with the additional ingredients we would need to create the skin nourishing mask.  Today I noticed that the gorgeously green avocados and fine-looking bananas were not looking soooo attractive anymore... which means, they are ripe and ready!  So I decided to go ahead and prepare the face mask, along with a deep conditioning (scrumptious) hair mask, and provide my face and hair with a treat. (Recipes to follow)

Now, why would you want to concoct a face or hair mask when you can purchase one already formulated for you? Well, there are a number of benefits to using a freshly blended mask, here are some of them:
          • Fresh ingredients have active vitamins and minerals that help to nourish and replenish the skin.
          • Many of the store bought brands have chemical ingredients that don't benefit (and can cause harm to) your skin.  Many of these ingredients are used to give the product a 2+ year shelf life. (yikes)
          • Creating something with your own two hands, using it and experiencing delightfully pleasing results... what can be better??
          • Economically, it is a great way to utilize ripe and ready produce, that might have made its way (sadly) into your green bin before you were able to enjoy it/them. And it cost a fraction of any store bought product.
Tip - remember to use organic ingredients where possible as this helps to limit your exposure to harmful pesticides and chemicals, while providing your skin (and body) with increased nutrition; higher amounts of beneficial minerals, essential amino acids and vitamins. Also, purchasing locally harvested ingredients helps to reduce your carbon footprint and helps support your local economy.

These Winter skin/hair-soothing masks are a great way to nourish and moisturize your skin and hair while pampering yourself.  It works well for all skin types and is particularly beneficial for dry and mature skin.  You will find these masks helpful throughout the seasons, whenever skin is dry or affected by the elements (sun, wind, heat, cold even too much time in the water) - whenever your complexion needs some brightening.

Phew... this blog entry is becoming long-winded.  I will post the ingredients and recipes with directions very soon.

          Live Purple

When we were seeking a name for our fresh & natural product line/business, we played out a variety of brainstorming activities... wrote out concepts... sketched ideas... kept a file on "likes & inspiration"... jotted down "name possibilities" whenever they popped up (often in the middle of the night).  We had fun with the experience, but also challenged one another on what each felt was the best name for US.  It would need to be a name to stand the test of time, not be too trendy, and a name that we would be proud of, for all that it would represent.

In the end, we felt that the name should reflect the essence of our life philosophy; enjoy the pure and simple, essentials of life! The name Purple Essentials was a perfect fit.

We strive to live purple and encourage others to do so, also.
Each of us needs to determine what constitutes purple living for ourselves.
For us, we believe the pure joys in life are simple... enjoy it all. In business, as in our personal lives, it is about the people we connect with and what we share.  Share your passion and embrace where that leads you. When we open our hearts and minds, opportunities are everywhere, we just need to recognise them and go for it.

Do what you love, do it well and do it often!

          Beautiful Monday

Now, some Mondays are bearable, some Mondays are enjoyable and then once in awhile you get a Monday like today...  it is an Amazing Monday!

My perception could be swayed by the fact that I started the day out right with a long hike through the conservation area, with fluffy squirrels, a few deer and an owl sighting, in weather that is a balmy 3 C.  There is a good feeling in the air.

2012 is a great new year!

The weekend was rather busy, filled with photo shoot prep and shots of each of Purple Essentials' fresh & natural products, for the website.  Setting up the camera, light box, tripod, lighting and such took some time.  Testing out a variety of shots and looks, again more time.  By  the end of the weekend we managed to collect a good assortment of pics that we can now use to build our new site.

Good things ahead... looking forward to them all.

          New Year Brings New Opportunities

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland

The holidays here were wonderful, filled with family, friends and reflection time.  We are currently enjoying the to return to a productive routine.

I have to say that we have been over-joyed with the glowing reviews from people who received a variety of our products as gifts through the holidays.  A number of people have taken the time to write and share just how thrilled they were to find Purple Essentials products left by "Santa" under their Christmas trees.  Also, we have been equally thrilled by the positive response from customers old & new, along with a number of spa and retail enquiries... New Year brings new opportunities :)

We are eagerly working on the new website and excited to get it up and running.  There will be a detailed product and ingredient list, pics along with ordering options.

          Matcha Green Tea

          2012 also brings inspiration...
not to mention some luscious new products that are on the agenda for development... hint: Matcha Green Tea is inspiring me to create some exciting new recipes.
